The formula is 100-the first 2 digits of the serial # (100-08 =92) They are really nice rifles! After the war in 1945, when Marlin got back into the consumer gun business, they were basically using parts on hand to assemble rifles. These parts were generally from 1941. The receivers were case colored on the 1936/36's, the same for the 39A's. I have a 39A that i got from my father-in law. I was trying to find out the manufacture date, but the first character of the serial number is odd. (see attached image). It looks like it could be a D or a P, but it is missing part of the letter. It does not look like the missing part has worn off, it looks like it was never there.
